History

Iroquois FIN 12

Iroquois was launched in New York in 1968, at the same boatyard that built four consecutive America's Cup winners. It made waves as the world’s newest and most innovative 8-metre yacht; inspired by her big sister, 12mR Intrepid, Iroquois set a new standard for the 8mR class. Iroquois' design drew heavily from Intrepid’s success. Sporting a trim tab, spade rudder, custom titanium fittings, below-deck grinders, and wire sheets, Iroquois was a marvel of yacht engineering. Her sleek design and powerful rig were described as nothing short of intimidating.

Her designer, Olin Stephens, known in Finland for shaping Nautor’s Swan, was present at her launch. When asked if Iroquois might inspire a resurgence in the 8mR class, Stephens quipped, "Too much boat for only two to sleep." Yet Iroquois went on to win two World Cups, and to inspire countless new yachts over the years to come, cementing her legacy. The first modern 8-metre ever built, Iroquois remains the only modern yacht in the Finnish fleet. Her home port and yacht club will proudly host the 2025 World Cup — a fitting celebration of her lasting influence and timeless innovation.

Did you know that two-thirds of the Iroquois crew work in health care? So if you get seasick, you're in the best of hands!
