History
Wyvern, was one of 11 Starling Burgess designed, Abeking Rasmussen built Eight Metres. They were all together designed and built for the New York Yacht Club as Olympic Contenders. Out of these 11 Eights, 4 still exist, 2 still race and 2 are for sale as a restoration project layed up in Ontario.Wyvern is a new comer to the Great Lakes. As one of the one-design Eights built by Abeking and Rasmussen in Germany in 1928, she is a sistership of Leif III. Over her long carcer she has sailed under several different owners and names. Her present owner, Paul Doyle, brought her to Canada from Oyster Bay, New York, in 1978. Restoration was undertaken in Toronto by the Shipwrights Guild. A new aluminum mast was installed in 1966, but the rigging and sail plan does not differ significantly from the original design. Wyvern has competed infrequently against her Lake Ontario counterparts, and her full capabilities remain untested. this needs an update since Wyvern has been sailing and racing for some years now in Europe
